Who We Are
We are artists, activists & soccer-dads. We are people looking for more than the mainstream, corporately sponsored events in our area. We represent, and assist, just about anyone in the El Paso, Las Cruces & Juarez area who celebrates diverse points of view; and radical, artistic self-expression.
Many of us go to the annual Burning Man event in Nevada; many of us remember going; and many of us dream of going. But the Burning Man culture & ethos is less and less about going to the event in Nevada; and more and more about being a "burner at heart". We've got well over 100 burners at heart on our local email announce list. Building and using this network is the most powerful tool we have for building a community of Border Burners. Subscribe to the Announce List and get announcements about upcoming Border Burners events; AND get posts from other list members about relevant events and activities; AND you can post your own events announcements to the rest of the community.
This network is also a great way to stay connected with those who do travel to Burning Man, during the other 51 weeks of the year. We coordinate rideshares to Burning Man, and playa art projects. 2008 will see the first Borderland Playa Party at Burning Man. We also coordinate rideshares & resources for those attending other Regional Burns in our area; such as Toast in Arizona, and Flipside in Austin; as well as the joint Arizona/New Mexico/Borderland Decompression in October. We don't have our own Regional Burn here … yet!
We also try to stay connected here at home. We have had Burning Man documentary showings in El Paso and Las Cruces. We are working on on-going Poi/Fire Arts workshops in both El Paso and Las Cruces. We are here to help establish de-comodified community art projects.
The way we avoid corporate sponsorship is simple … volunteerism. Burning Man culture is a "do-ocracy". If there is something lacking in our community, make it. There is a network of like-minded people here to help each other achieve everyone's goals. You may be surprised at how much help you get. Thanks to volunteers who came forward with resources for the community, we have venues and teachers for our poi workshops; and we have this website.
Please get on the Announce List to hear about all the upcoming events; and to be able to post your own events to the rest of the community.
